Story of the wine:
It is wine such as this that shows the enormous potential of this, generally under-rated region. It is a blend of mainly Montepulciano balanced by Sangiovese where the richness of the Montepulciano is complemented by the structure of the Sangiovese. Piersanti is a winery that started in the 1950’s making sparkling wines but then expanded into a fuller range of Marche wines.
The history of the red wines of Picenum goes back to Roman times as it is often mentioned in the literature of the period. Indeed Hannibal’s cavalry used the wine to rub down and invigorate their horses!
Grape(s): 30% Sangiovese 70% Montepulciano
Area: From vineyards in the hills of Ascoli Piceno and Ancona between the rivers of Tronto and Misa
The Marche, a much under-rated region halfway down Italy’s Adriatic coast, always makes wines with character and flavour. This is a firm, medium weight wine with richness and an elegant finish. A blend of predominantly Montepulciano with a touch of Sangiovese.
