Story of the wine:
Giancarlo Scaglione, owner and winemaker, is something of a guru in Piemonte. A teacher at the famous Alba Oenological School he has his own tiny family estate near the town of Canelli where he makes some of Italy’s finest sweet wines. The complexity of this wine is due to the several different techniques used in its production. First there is the late harvesting of grapes with a touch of Noble Rot. Then there is the passito or drying of about 15% of the grapes to add weight and finally the extremely long slow fermentation. The DOC was created in 1992.
Grapes: 100% Moscato Bianco
Area: From a single vineyard of 2.27ha. with a south west exposure.
Loazzolo is a tiny area near the ancient town of Asti and has the reputation of producing some of Italy’s finest Moscato wines using the passito or dried grape method. The miniscule Forteto dela Luja estate is generally regarded as one of the top Loazzolo producers. A rich distinctly perfumed nose is followed by a deliciously full and balanced sweetness and a long, long finish.
