Story of the wine:
Although grown through much of Italy Barbera’s natural home is Piemonte, (roughly half of Piemonte’s wine is Barbera) indeed its birthplace is usually thought to be in the hills of
Monferrato around the town of Asti. Often described as the ‘people’s wine’ of Pemonte it is a highly versatile variety capable of styles running from the very light and fruity to the substantial and complex. A distinctive characteristic of Barbera is its quite high levels of acidity that make a consummate wine to accompany food.
Grape(s): 100% Barbera
Area: From vineyards near Monferrato, particularly Montaldo Scarampi
Barbera has been rediscovered over the last decade or so, such that we now have an exciting range of styles and qualities of this once everyday grape. Piemonte producers of the quality of Forteto have realised its potential. A delicious fruity nose is followed by a rounded soft palate. On the finish it has distinct herbal tones.
