Story of the wine:
Whilst wine making in the Rioja region of northern Spain goes back many centuries it was in the 19th century that it revived due to the influx of French and in particular Bordeaux wine makers fleeing the phylloxera epidemic that devasted their vineyards. There are several styles of Rioja, from the basic Tinto to the prestigious Gran Reservas. The first, simply labeled Rioja Tinto (tinto meaning red), is the youngest, spending less than a year in oak. Bodegas de Familia Burgo Viejo is a collaboration of six families that established the winery in 1987 based in Alfaro at the eastern end of Rioja Baja.
Grape(s): 100% Tempranillo
Area: From the bodegas own vineyards around the town of Alfaro
Rioja is one of the great wines of Spain and indeed the world and this example made from a family run winery is an accessible example. A delicious soft fruitiness on the nose is balanced by ripe fruit and a lightly dry finish.
